Baby Gulls

Here is a question for you:  Have you ever seen a baby sea gull?  I am not talking about the immature ones that are big and brown, but babies.  Well I had never seen one until Saturday.  I was on a boat trip to see the southern lighthouses in Narraganset Harbor.  We saw about eight light houses, including the one that wasn't there any more on Whale Island.  These are about half the ones in Rhode Island.  Our last stop was Rose Island and I would like to return there and spend more time.  This is where we saw the baby herring gulls.

We found out that the reason you don't see babies is that they are hatched on islands.  Now if we can see a baby pigeon....

Critters and Creatures

I didn't want too much time to pass between posts so I thought I would share more photos from Florida.  It seems like a long time ago and the weather here is a little on the cool side.  I am anxiously awaiting eighty degree.  And yes, the alligator was that close.

New/Old Work

I finally got around to photographing some finished work.

This is a bowl that I fished out of the trash because one of my studio mates did not like it for some reason.  I can't figure out why so I rescued it.  I painted it with considerable assistance from a friend but of course I overdid it with the red.

This is one of the pieces that came out of the large image transfer class.  It is a photo from the Chincoteague workshop and if you look closely you can see some collage elements. I added the birds to cover up the spots where I rubbed holes in the transfer.  It is about 40 x 28 and it hangs over my sofa for the time being.

This is the last piece from the transfer class.  I was quite pleased with myself until I realized that I flipped one of the panels and I had a hole in the koi's head where I didn't adhere the transfer so well.  I pulled out my trusty water soluble oil pastels and made him a new flipper and filled in the hole in his head and his side.  Not a bad patch job.

More Workshop Photos

Well if you haven't guessed by now, I took a lot of pictures at the workshop.  I am posting a selected few of some specific themes like the beach, birds landscapes, etc.  I hope I am not boring any of you readers but here are some more.  This set I got pretty lucky and the eagle was very cooperative and sat for a long time.  We learned how to approach an animal, very slowly.  The results were worth waiting for.

Here he was, just sitting there

This black bird had no fear

Apparently they don't mind harassing a bigger bird

He buzzed by pretty close

I almost got this one right.  I just needed the light in his eye.

Enough of this!

More Workshop Pictures

It seems like I have running in place.  The past couple of weeks have slipped away and between work and organizing the house, I have had little time for art.  I have made a promise to myself to get to the studio and put some finishing touches on two small paintings I started today.  Since I didn't have my camera, I will share some more photos from my Road Scholar workshop.

This is Assateague Light House.  I had a hard time photographing it but this is one of my better efforts.

A Snowy Egret, aka Big White Bird.  Too bad I had all my camera settings wrong.

This one is going to be a painting one of these days.
